AAUW BEAVER VALLEY BRANCH  “All about us”

The Beaver Valley Branch is gearing up for another exciting year! Our 16th Annual Kitchen Tour, “Touring and Tasting Delights,” will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2017. Patrons tour fabulous kitchens and taste some excellent cuisine from our local chefs in homes in the Beaver/Brighton Twp. areas. Tickets to this event are $15, and each member is expected to sell or purchase at least two. This event, our only fundraiser, raises over $10,000 for scholarships and for our mission based programs . With the money raised, we award three $1500 traditional scholarships to graduating female high school seniors and two $1500 nontraditional scholarships to women who have decided to return to or continue their college education. Viv Mahli, Education Fund Chair, chairs the kitchen tour, assisted by the KT Leadership Team consisting of members Andrea Challis, Rose Homish, Jean Macaluso, Betsey Uslenghi, and Debi Breit-Adams.

We also host a “Marketplace” from 9:30 am. to 3:30 p.m. the day of the tour at Dutch Ridge Elementary School. At the Marketplace, patrons can visit vendors selling a variety of items, enjoy a catered lunch (tickets sold separately in advance), browse our gently used handbag and accessory table, purchase delicious baked goods at the bake sale, and participate in a basket raffle. All bake sale items are provided by our members. Chairs of the Handbag/Accessories Sale, Bake Sale, and Raffle are Kim Litz, Pam Powers, and Jean Macaluso, respectively.

In addition to our Committees, the Beaver Valley Branch has Interest Groups to involve our membership. There are three Literature groups under the leadership of Linda Lobozzo, Beth Buttermore, and Joan Tracy. A Cultural Interest group headed by Susan Brandt affords members the opportunity to attend local theatrical or musical performances. Susan also leads an Investment Group for those interested in learning how the market operates. Norma Kehr leads the Antiques Interest Group and Rae Nancy Zuberbuhler leads the Gardening Interest Group. But by far the most “appetizing” of our Interest Groups is Femmes du Jour chaired by Jean Macaluso. This group meets monthly at different local restaurants for lunch. At the Christmas Femmes luncheon, Jean does an outstanding job at a fun filled holiday celebration for our ladies who choose to attend.

The Beaver Valley Branch Community Committee hosts a Girls’ Recognition Night in partnership with the Beaver County Community College. These eighth grade girls are recognized for their ability in math and/or science. They are recommended by their teacher for this award and are presented with beautiful certificates and a copy of the teacher’s recommendation which is read at the ceremony. All Beaver County Middle Schools are invited to submit their nominees. At our GRN there is a panel of women whose careers involve STEM. This wonderful event, coordinated by Co-Chairs Jodean Brooks and Joann Lecrone, highlights the possibilities these young ladies have. This Community Committee also organizes a local bingo and board game night at local nursing and personal care homes.

To keep us in the know, a monthly mailing prepared by Pam Powers is sent out electronically or mailed hard copy to our members without an e-mail address. Pam does a beautiful job with keeping us informed.

Beaver Valley Branch has a well maintained website: http://beavervalley-pa. aauw.net that keeps our members and community aware of our programs and activities. We also have a Facebook page, AAUW Beaver Valley Branch. Our social media is beautifully handled by Co-Chairs Jackie Heaney and Lea Kretchmar. Please visit and like our page!

AAUW Beaver Valley Branch invites you to join us if you hold an Associate Degree or higher from qualified institutions. RNs also qualify for membership. Our Membership Vice President, Sharon Nerone, who may be reached at nerones@aol.com, will be happy to answer any of your questions and help you with your application.
