Gateway to Equity Award

International Women’s Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the economic, political, and social achievements of women past, present and future. It started in 1911.  In some places like China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria it is a national holiday.
AAUW PA created the Gateway to Equity award to honor individuals, groups or organizations that have shown, by action and philosophy, that they advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy or research.

AAUW Beaver Valley Branch honored the Community College of Beaver County (CCBC) at their March 1st meeting. We selected CCBC to receive the Gateway to Equity Award because of its continued support of women’s issues.  CCBC has hosted a “Getting to Know Us” event for attracting new members to our organization, has accommodated our branch for “Girl’s Recognition Night” (STEM) and for projects addressing our annual “KitchenTour” for scholarships.
President Dr. Joe Forrester, president of CCBC accepted the award.  He spoke briefly of the mission of CCBC and community colleges in general of providing access to higher education for women and minorities through the national initiative, Achieving the Dream. Not only does it help many to complete their degree, but it leads to opportunity for a brighter future, higher pay, and equity.

This award is presented annually honoring an individual or organization that has shown by action and philosophy the promotion of the AAUW mission.
